Application tips

When you apply for a position with Nuttersons, we want you to have the best chance of impressing us as possible. In order to help you make the most of your opportunity, we put together this list of job application tips. If you can get our attention, you will be a step ahead of the competition.

Tailor your application

Everyone has specific qualities and attributes they bring to the table. So take a few minutes and really consider what it is you have to offer. Think about what makes you a good fit for our company, and why your qualities and attributes can make us better. Don't forget to include any special things that interest you as well.

Your CV should include as much information as possible about you, as long as it's relevant to the position you're applying for. You'll definitely need to include things like:
  • educational background
  • previous work history
  • contact information, including address
  • a minimum of two references
  • any outside interests, voluntary work, or hobbies relevant to your work with Nuttersons.
We recommend you keep your CV to no more than two pages. Providing a longer document is a proven way to overwhelm a hiring manager with too much information.

Show us you're different

You've undoubtedly heard the phrase 'stand out from the crowd'. It is a phrase used by marketers all the time to demonstrate that their clients are better than the competition. You essentially have the same job ahead of you when you apply for a position at Nuttersons. You need to show us you're different right from the start.

This begins by making sure your CV clearly demonstrates you meet all of the minimum requirements for the job you are applying for. We create a short list of candidates for every position, comprised of those who meet minimum qualifications. Only after we've created our shortlist do we begin looking for candidates we believe have additional qualities and skills that can add to our company.

Convincing us you have those qualities and skills requires creativity. And that's by design. We are a creative agency involved in a creative environment and industry. We want to see that you fit in as well. So be creative with your application.

There are many ways to be creative, including:
  • creating a short video in which you talk personally to our hiring manager
  • telling a story or two about something in your past that's relevant
  • creating your CV with a modular design rather than straight text.
We've only given you three ideas for creativity because we want you to think of others on your own. That's part of the process. The point is that we want you to show you are creative and imaginative enough to be part of the Nuttersons team.

Why is creativity so important? Because academics no longer tell the full story of what a job candidate is capable of. We want to know who you really are outside of your academic performance. So don't be afraid to tell us about voluntary work, sports participation, or anything else that gets to the core of your heart and soul. It's helpful to include things that specifically demonstrate your skills as they relate to the job you're pursuing.

And one last thing: do not be afraid to promote yourself through a hard sell. As long as you don't display an attitude of arrogance and overconfidence, we want to see you promote yourself.

Be clear and concise

A number of studies suggest that hiring managers look at CVs for less than 30 seconds during the shortlisting process. If you make the short list, a hiring manager might give your CV a second review lasting no more than a couple of minutes. You need to make an impression, but you need to be clear and concise.

For example, don't write an entire paragraph to answer a question that needs no more than one or two sentences. Everything you write should be focused enough to provide the information while still keeping the hiring manager interested. Where previous work experienced is concerned, this principle is vitally important.

Do list all of your previous work experience so that we know where you come from. Nevertheless, don't include details of every single job, especially if those details are not relevant to the position you're applying for. Keeping it simple is a plus.

While we're at it, proper grammar and spelling is a must. Nothing will create a bad impression faster than a CV rife with errors, especially in a business centred on effective communication. Please take the time to proofread everything you've written and spell check your documents before finalising them.

Remember, you want to be clear and concise while selling yourself to us. We want to know as much as we can about you in as few words as possible. So check and recheck your work to make sure it's perfect.

Pay attention to presentation

It helps us to get a quick handle on your CV if you format it in a way that makes key points stand out quickly. Again, your CV should be no longer than two pages. If you can be clear and concise while limiting yourself to a single page, all the better. Also consider using headings, subheadings, and bold text to lead us through your CV. Save your CV as a PDF document in order to preserve any formatting you've applied.

Show us transferable skills

Assuming you've worked in previous positions through which you've acquired skills that will be useful to us, we want to know about those skills. They include things like problem-solving skills, the ability to work as part of a team, the ability to manage your workload, analytical skills, and the ability to work under pressure.

Include a cover letter

A cover letter serves two purposes when you apply for a position with Nuttersons. First, it's your opportunity to personally introduce yourself to our hiring manager beyond the information found in your CV. It's your opportunity to make a personal connection.

Second, you will be sending us all of your documents in a single .ZIP file or other compressed format. Including a cover letter gives us a good starting point when we open your package. Use your cover letter to briefly explain:
  • your current circumstances, including why you're applying for a job
  • why you want to work for us ahead of our competitors
  • why you think we should be interested in you over other candidates.

Include a portfolio

As a creative company operating in a very creative industry, it helps us if we can see samples of your work. If you are applying for a position in one of our creative departments ' i.e., web design, web development, videography, or photography ' include a portfolio of any work you've done in the past. It doesn't need to be work for which you've been paid, as long as it's verifiable as original to you. Your portfolio may include links to work you've already published online.

What you are shooting for is a portfolio demonstrating that what you have to offer can add value to our company. It shows that creative side of you we are looking for, in a way that also shows us you can contribute to what we're trying to accomplish.

We look forward to hearing from you if you plan to apply for a position with Nuttersons. Should you ultimately decide not to apply, we wish you well in all your future endeavours!
